Wrapping up the Year at Damside

It’s been a busy year at Damside welcoming back students while weathering the pandemic and continuing to rebuild the school.

Work continued on the second block of classrooms as well as the administration building. Roofing continued along the second block of classrooms along with new doors and windows. The classroom floors and verandahs were leveled so the rooms could be usable for students.

This work was supported through continued donations from people the world over but also through loans secured by the Damside Administration.

The work isn’t over yet! There are some additional classrooms that need roofing, windows and doors that will allow Damside to accept more students for this next term.

Happy New Year from Damside!

Happy New Year!

We are so excited with all of the recent developments at Damside! Over the last few months there has been a lot of work completed at the school.

The first classroom block has been equipped with new doors and windows, verandas and roofing completed as well as painted!

Additionally, a fence around the school property has been completed to increase safety for both the students and faculty.

The Hen project continues to thrive creating a small monthly income for the school.

None of this would be possible without the generous contributions from donors so thank you so much! We are looking forward to a happy and healthy 2020 at Damside!

Sad News from Nairobi

It is with a heavy heart, we share recent tragedy of the collapse of a school building in Nairobi. On September 23rd, the second story of Precious Talent Top School collapsed killing 7 students and injuring many more. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families affected. The Kenyan government has been working diligently to inspect schools throughout the country to ensure the stability and safety of schools. As a result, almost 300 schools have been closed affecting almost 10,000 students. The number one priority at Damside is always the safety of students. The school administration has met with government inspectors to review the progress of current structures and identify high priority initiatives.

In response to those meetings, we have assessed and created a 4-year action plan for our donors and constituents to review.

The Hen Project

Thanks to the generous support of many donors, family, friends, and volunteers, Damside was able to implement the start of the Hen Project! This included the construction of a shelter for the hens to lay their eggs, and the purchase of 100 hens. Once on site, they began to lay eggs to feed students and faculty, as well as serve as a commodity sold to the local community for income fed back into the school’s other projects and fees. The hen house was built to hold 300 hens, so as the project continues the plan is to up the inventory, as they say. Check out the status update below on the progress of this project according to Headmaster, Peter Mandela!

  • Currently 50 hens are on-site actively producing eggs. This has been a great experience so far and we are eagerly awaiting the delivery of 50 more!

  • 100 hens would bring in roughly 300,000 ksh ($2,900 USD) with maintenance costs around 100,000 ksh ($969 USD). The return on investment is greatly encouraging for the future of Damside.

  • Parent volunteers and students help to care for the hens. This lesson in responsibility that comes with caring for an animal is invaluable to our students and community. Not only are they learning business skills, but discipline and kindness as well.

  • Some eggs will be used in the schools feeding program with the rest being sold at local markets - a great impact all around!

  • Future plans hold the potential to not only purchase even more hens, but breed our existing supply!

Completing the Roofing Project at Damside

The year is off to a great start at Damside! Our big push over the next few months is to complete the roofing over our block of 5 classrooms. As the rainy season approaches we definitely want to ensure our students are safely covered and happy in their new classrooms.

We need to raise $3,300 USD for this project and we are already well on our way! See photos below of our classrooms.
